ASSDA publishes new Food Code of Practice

The Australian Stainless Steel Development Association (ASSDA) has published its 3rd edition of the Food Code of Practice, a free technical specification covering the requirements for the design, fabrication, inspection, transport and installation of stainless steel plant and equipment in the food and beverage industry.

Originally published as the ASSDA Food Specification in 2006, the Code of Practice is a co-operative venture by ASSDA and members of Australian food industry, ranging in expertise in the design, supply and fabrication of stainless steels.

Changes in standards, working practices, materials and asset owners’ expectations over the last few years required an update to the publication, and the 2014 edition reflects current requirements in the design and fabrication process specifically for food and beverage plant.

ASSDA Executive Director Richard Matheson said the Food Code of Practice is not intended to replace national and international standards, but it continues to stand as an extremely practical technical specification used in conjunction with ASSDA’s Accredited Fabricator scheme.

“Hygiene and the cleanability of equipment used in the production of food, dairy and beverage are paramount, and when specified and fabricated correctly, stainless steel ensures this,” Richard said.

“ASSDA Accreditation is a self-regulated scheme that standardises fabrication practices and improves efficiency and reliability by raising the standard of quality delivered for the long-term, reducing risk to end-users.

“We encourage all operators in this field to use it to improve their practices and we hope the code will continue to be a useful contribution to the industry.”

ASSDA’s Food Code of Practice is available for free download from, as well as a list of Accredited Fabricators.
