SASSDA 50th anniversary

2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the Southern Africa Stainless Steel Development Association (Sassda). To celebrate, Sassda commemorated the development of stainless steel in South Africa at its 2014 Stainless Steel Awards Ceremony this November.

The awards are traditionally a celebration of the success of stainless steel in the country; however, this year SASSDA was not only celebrating the industry's recent achievements, but also the rich history of the South African stainless steel industry.

The South African stainless steel industry has led the way with many innovations. A notable innovation is the development of 3CR12 by local mill and manufacturer, Columbus Stainless. “3CR12 is now recognised as the world’s most specified 12% chromium utility stainless steel,” says Bill Scurr, Sassda’s executive director. 3CR12 is one of the most price competitive, corrosion resistant, weldable, utility chromium steels used all over the world.

To mark the 50th anniversary, Sassda’s Stainless Steel magazine is taking this opportunity to look back at the companies, members and individuals who have shaped the industry over the past five decades.

“This year’s collectors’ item magazines will each have a dedicated section to celebrate the past 50 years,” says Scurr. “The local industry has made such gains and set a global standard for development – a success we can truly celebrate.”

Scurr says the anniversary was an opportunity to celebrate the growth and success of one of the largest, and oldest, stainless steel development associations in the world.

2014 celebrates 50 years of growth in the industry, as well as Sassda’s recommitment to its members, together with reinforcing its relationships with fellow associations and other stakeholders for many years to come.
