Important Scope 3 GHG Update

In early 2026, the Nickel Institute issued some key revisions to its Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions guidance for the nickel industry. The document outlines more stringent, specific, and harmonised rules designed to improve data quality, transparency, and compliance with international standards like the GHG Protocol and ISO 14040/14044 series. Key changes include mandatory biogenic CO₂, methane, and nitrous oxide accounting, stricter carbon removal rules with reports requiring “measurement-grade” evidence, guidance that now aligns with the Partnership for Carbon Transparency (PACT) methodology, and increased focus on upstream data including more detailed emission factors for key, “first-use” areas such as stainless steel, alloys, plating, and precursor cathode active material (pCAM) to help fill customer gaps.
